Tour De Burren 2009 - Feedback

Well done for Saturday!!  What an event!!! The weather helped but it was very well organized from the start right the (long) way through to the end and I just thought it was amazing!  Congrats to you and your crew, it was a credit to ye all.

Thanks a mil

Well done on a fantastic tour.

I had an absolutely fantastic day, while I'm not new to cycling as I do a good bit on my own, i've never before cycled in a group. the organisation, camaraderie, and overall spirit and professionalism of the whole day was a credit to the Club.

Well done to all the stewards who were in all the right areas and very encouraging, to all who helped at the food stops, and to the overall orgainisation by all involved.

As an add on please pass on my thanks to one of your members Anthony O Holloran (I think) from Ruan, who pulled me along when I was finding it tough. A little while later we found the group again and buzzed home.

A great day had by all, take a bow. I've already passed on the message to a good few friends to make sure to put it on the 'to do' list.

The tour was absolutely brilliant. It started on time, it was very well marshalled and signed and I've never seen so much food on a tour in my life. That was the only time I've managed to have cheesecake on a cycle and it was great. And well done on organizing the weather. The only tiny suggestion I'd have is to have the water at the stops in smaller containers as the ones that were there were a bit awkward. Other than that it was a fantastic day and I'll definitely be back. Great job, well done to all involved and thanks.

Twas an excellent ride , food excellent , very nice cheese case, no more T shirts how about a nice medal!

I took part in the 160km event on Saturday and I enjoyed every minute of it. I am in the Galway Tri Club and have been involved in organising our annual triathlon for the past number of years so I know what is involved and you event ticked every box. I have cycled a few sportifs on the continent and this ranked along side any in terms of quality.

  Good:

   1. Safety - marshalls at every corner and excellent road markings...top

   notch

   2. Registration - fast and smooth

   3. Food stops - excellent quality and good balance of the plain sandwich

with mad sugar hit chocolate sponge. No queues !!

   4. Road closure at start was excellent and great to spin along without

   worrying about cars.

   Suggestions:

   1. I wonder about the need for timing chips, most bikes have speedos and

we all stop so does the time mean anything really? The clock at the end was

good but will the chip tell me anything else? It would mean a big cost

saving for you guys. We didn't treat the day as a race so we wondered about

the need for chips esp with clock overhead at race end.

   2. A good bike pump at each stop, we carried our own but in Doolin a good

foot pump would have been a blessing.

Other than that I would like to you to thank all the volunteers and organisers for a top day.

Looking forward to next year already.

PR

- Maybe next time Clare FM could do some coverage on the day don't know if they did that on Sat.

- Might be a good Idea to issue a press release to the papers & cycling websites with some photos.

- I'm sure all the e-mail addresses have been collected- these can be used next year to promote the event.

I thought it was super. Don't have much experience of these type of things but from start to finish it was great.

I have to say that between the Burren CC, An Post, Clare LSP and Precision Timing there was definitely a benchmark set for how sportives can and should be run in Ireland.

Re. the timing chips - great idea and facility and as well as the advantage of the timing (and novelty for some) it helped give an extra sense that this was a 'serious' event and added to the overall feel and atmosphere to proceedings.

The only possible hiccup was with fixation to pedals - many cyclists at the level capable of completing 100km+ cyclosportives will be using clipless pedals such as Shimano SPD-sl's, Look Keo's, Speedplay zeros or similar which don't have a conventional cage design/a very small footprint and fine tolerances for engagement of the cleat. I personally use the Keos and what I did was to zip-tie the card to the inside of crank arm with one tie above the pedal axle and the other below to prevent it slipping up or down the arm. I don't know yet if that worked, but if it did so then it might be a good alternative instruction for placement in subsequent events.

Once again, thanks for your contribution to a great event - we had 12 members travel up for it and with the reports that will be going back to Tralee and around the country I think you'll be bringing a lot more timing chips next year

I'm delighted to email you to say that I really really enjoyed the every 160km of the cycle on Sat. The volunteers were excellent at both stopping traffic to ensure that we crossed at junctions safe but also at shouting on support at us-they kept me going during the times when my brain and legs were telling me to stop.

The scenery of the route was amazing. And to top it all off-the food was plentiful and delicious-the only way to have it when one is stuck to the saddle for the day and might I add that the cheesecake was only fab.

Unfort I did'nt  get to go to the BBQ but i have no doubt that it would have been brill.

Fair play to all of ye-I hope ye had a great weekend of celebrations.

Trisha O Brien

Just a quick email to say congratulations on such a well run event, I

enjoyed every minute of it. In the last year I've done the Ring of Kerry, Corrib Cycle and the Wicklow 200 and the TdB was the most enjoyable and well run of them all. There was a great atmosphere, everybody was really friendly, the food stops were lovely and the marshalling in particular was top class. We'll definitely be back next year.

Thanks for a great day. noel the tour was very good this year. the route speaks for itself in that it is plenty hiily enough for anybody and scenic as you could want. i bekieve the 60 km route was good too as my brother did that one and really enjoyed it. the food stops were great this year and the staff who worked there were brilliant. just one problem noel though. this is the second year running that when i got to the mens shower there was no water again. a few of us used a hose pipe with freezing water that was coming in the window from outside. what is the story with them showers in the gaa pitch ?. thanks again noel. it was a great day and ill be there again next year please god.

Thank you and well done for organising such a fantastic event.  Very well organised and everyone involved was very friendly, helpful and added to the spirit of the day. Food stop in Lisdoonvarna was unbelievable - and of course the amazing route and weather helped with forgetting the sore backsides!

Only comment for next year is that the water stops could maybe be a little better sign posted.

Overall though a super day, you've set a very high standard for every other event this summer to match up to!
Well done again!

Can i just add my congratulations to you and your club on the excellent organisation of the weekends cycle in the Burren, 3 of us completed the 160k spin, tough but good, we fully enjoyed the day, excellent organisation, marshalling, road signage, massive amounts of food, that gorgeous apple pie and hot sweet tea saved my life in Doolin and got me home. An excellent day, we will be back next year. Well done to all involved.

Hello

Middle-aged, recreational cyclist here - just a quick comment to thank you for an very well-run event on Saturday. There was a lovely combination of fun, informality and organisation that really made it an excellent day. Just one question - who cooked the apple slices? I want to marry that woman...

Regards

Paul T

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What can I add to the comments already posted?  Excellent event.  Superb organisation.  Many  thanks to all concerned.

On behalf of the West Clare Cycling Club members who participated, could I congratulate all the Burren Cycling Club on a very professionally run event. It is difficult to find fault given the obvious huge amount of thought, time and effort that went into the preparation and execution of the event.

If the microchip timing is to be continued next year may I suggest that the timing device be placed nearer the road-side at the Lisdoonvarna food stop entrance, as many cyclists dismounted and pushed their bikes up the incline into car park and past the timer.

Well done again

Just want to say a big thank you to everyone involved for a great event on Saturday.
I enjoyed it immensley and look forward to next year, when hopefully I'll be a little bit fitter.

Just a thought on the course, with regard to the run from Corofin (my home town - nearly) to Ennistymon - the term I heard most often to describe it was 'soul destroying'. It's a dull, boring road which feels like a road to nowhere, completley out of context with the rest of the trip, there is nothing to see, no sign posts, no nothing.

Maybe put a waterstop out there, just to relieve the monotony.

About 1 KM from the turn off to Ennistymon (at the
creamery in Corofin)- there is a turn off to the left for Inagh - via
Moy Hill - a nice little climb, this drops down to Maurice's Mills -
turn right at the junction, and about 3 km further on, you meet up with
the main Ennis/Ennistymon road, about a mile from where you exit
currently.

Would add another climb, but wouldn't affect the overall distance, and
it's a nice view from the top, down to Mullaghmore etc.

Thanks & regards

Paul Vallely

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fantastic event and very enjoyable cycling.

The organisation was better than the Wicklow 200 and more like what you would get in France on the etape du tour. The Marshalls and police did an excellent job.

Thanks and all the best Shane Fanning

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Very happy to give some feedback on the Tour last Saturday. Fantastic event - the best one day event I've participated in and has set a bar for all the others to achieve. Excellent parking facilities, quick and easy registration, prompt start and great to have the road closure for the first few kilometers. Brilliant food stops and a challenging route, the last 20k were spectacular. I really enjoyed the day so a big thank you to all your volunteers and marshalls, I'll be back next year

Regards

Ciarán Crosbie

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just wanted to say that I believe the organisation that went into the event on Saturday was some of the best I have ever seen. The selection of Precision Timing, the set-up at the start, the sections of closed road, climb gradient and distance signs, the outstanding food stops (venues and quantity / selection of food) and volunteers who manned them, the marshals and the markings on the road for the junctions, the ambulance crews who unfortunately I heard were needed ........ all were top notch.

Just an example, one of the guys in our group got a puncture and we stopped at the water stop in Lahinch ..... the volunteer on hand had a foot pump which made the job so much easier. I have done a number of similar events over the last few years (including the rather wet ToB last year) and this was by far the best run.

For €30 entrance fee to get timing chip, t-shirt and abundance of food is excellent value for money.

Everyone involved in the event should be extremely proud of how well run the event was and I know that I will be returning next year for more of the same.

Thanks,

Seán O'Connell

Congragulations to all the burren cc members voluanteers etc who put on a great event this year hope to be there next year well done all

Quick note to say a BIG and well deserved Thank you & Congrats to everyone who participated in the organization and sponsoring of the Tour de Burren 2009.

It was my 1st time doing the Tour de Burren (60km loop) and actually was my 1st cycling race ever since I only started cycling after Christmas. I loved every minute of it, retrospectively even the "bad pull" right after Doolin seems ok!!!

Everyone from Marshalls to other cyclists were brilliant and so encouraging all throughout the day. I did the all Corkscrew hill on the bike for the 1st time on Saturday mostly thanks to 2 guys with Burren Cycling Club jersey (sorry don't know their name but hope they'll recognize themselves) who were there to encourage us and kept me going.

Thanks to them for that!

I was absolutely amazed by the food stop, organization (registration,

parking...etc) was great, the T-shirt/Cert is really a nice gesture and the "welcoming committee" at the finish line in Ballyvaughan made me feel like I was after wining the Tour de France ;-)

Well done!

Thanks for organising a wonderful event last Saturday through the very scenic and beautiful Burren countryside. I completed the 160km cycle with a friend of mine.  It was my second year doing this event.

Overall I think your preparation, planning and execution of the event on the day worked tremendously.  The food stops were fantastic with ample supplies for all!  The good weather on the day helped as well but the thanks goes down to all involved in organising it and those who helped out on the day.

The only thing I would comment on is the lack of safety awareness demonstrated by some motorists on the day particularly on the coast road back into Ballyvaughan.  We experienced near misses on at least three occasions. Whilst I appreciate its impossible to eliminate this completely perhaps if extra signage was put up it might entice motorists to be a little more careful.

Will definitely be back next year to improve on my time!

Many thanks,

Joseph Houlihan

A big thank you to the Burren CC and the many volunteers who made this a truly memorable day.  You have really set the standard for sportives in Ireland.

Really enjoyed my first tour de burren.

Well done, great event.

I notice my time is not posted on the results page.

Maybe the micro chip I fitted to the pedal was faulty?

Without any doubt this was the best organised cycle event I have ever participated in. Absolutely everything was out of the top drawer, the food, the marshalling, the smiles, the camaraderie, the positivity, it was marvellous!

If I am allowed one gripe then let it be known that if I ever find the fe**er responsible for the headwind out of Corofin he'll never ride a bike again!

Already planning for next year, thanks to everyone involved,

Just a quick note to congratulate and thank you all for such a great day last Saturday.  As a first time cyclist in an event like this, I was very impressed by the whole organisation of the event.  A special note for the road/safety marshalls - who were extremely helpful and encouraging.  Also, the food stop was extremely impressive - what a spread!! ....and at the perfect time!

The BBQ was a nice finish to a really enjoyable day!

The whole day was a fantastic experience from start to finish.  I am sure an event like this to organise is no small task but you and your team have really delivered and excelled on this!  It makes amateur cyclists like me want to continue on!!!..... Many Thanks and see you next year!!

I was competitor no 29 on the 160KM. Chain broke with 135KM on the clock so thumb back to ballyvaughan.  Luckily enough some young guy stopped and he gave me a lift back.

Everything was fantastic, food in lisdoonvarna but at the end no showers !!

No water at the clubrooms for showers

The Tour de Burren showed how to organise a great day of cycling. Everything ran smoothly from the moment we arrived in Ballyvaughan from parking, starting on closed roads to the tasty cheesecake at the food stops; they even has some sulphur-water to fill your bottles with if you're into that sort of thing: it smelt a bit too much of egg for my liking. The route was challenging and very scenic, with locals clapping and cheering as we went past. There were several marshals at each of the 70 junctions on the route. The weather was great and there was a really lovely atmosphere all day. Well done to all involved!

Well done to all for a superb tour and a superb weekend in Ballyvaughan.

The route was so well organized and marshalled that all we had to concentrate on were the hills and the views. I personally didn`t see the attraction of the timing chips for a leisure tour and what hurry would be on ye with the good  weather this year.

Full marks to all the ladies at the food stops for the huge array of goodies on offer.

I was just delighted to be able to participate and chuffed to complete the 160km!! I returned the two packs today - no 110 and 111 - since they hadn't arrived when we left Castletownbere on Wed. You re-issued no's 683and 684 to us. We really enjoyed our stay in Ballyvaughan - compliments to the organisers for a job well done and the barbecue was a great idea. We limped home on Sun - well exhausted - some with thudding hangovers but all in good form and saying "I'll be back"!!!

Had a wonderful day in The Burren on Saturday.  I went from Dublin to Castlebar on Friday and stayed with my sister then continued to Ballyvaughan on Sat am.

It truly was a wonderful day, the organisation was magnificent, the course was challenging but very doable (I'm 65).  The food stops were amazing (cant blame anybody for the fact the chocolate was all gone by the time I reached the 2nd stop).  The stewarding, road markings, parking facilities, etc. were excellent.  If I was to have one complaint it would be that after entering in advance and ordering a Sm teeshirt, the only one available to me was L, XL or XXL. Only a minor detail but if there had been one to fit me I would have worn it with pride.

All in all it was a great day and everybody involved in the organisation should be truly proud.  As far as timing goes, it is totally unimportant to me as I presume it gives overall, not cycling, time.

Best Wishes,

Evelyn Doyle

I am delighted to have taken part in this years cycle I did the 60 K .Over the past few years I have watched from the wings and wished to have taken part and did not .However with some help from my brother who did the 160 K. I got on my bike and Burned in the Burren - What an experience - if I had I wish after doing the cycle it would be to have

everyone who has not done it;   JUST DO IT

1.    The event was perfectly organized

2.    The organizing committee and Stewarts etc could not be more

polite and helpful and above all professional.

3.    The cycle was at times painful beyond imagination ( Cork screw

hill) but the rest of the time a pleasurable cycle and one I will do annually from now.

4.    I had the pleasure of meeting some really nice people while

doing it - especially this nice Lady called Rita from Dysart who help me along the way and crossed the finish line with - Thanks Rita -You could have passed your Son out if you wanted.

I could keep writing all day about the cycle - Thank you and to all the organizing committee for making this a cycle everyone off all ages and capabilities can take part in at what ever level they choose.

C U ALL NEXT YEAR AGAIN

Excellent event in every way with the advantage of enjoying the most beautiful part of the world on the planet.

Excellent -Hospitality -Organisation and amazing food stops.

It was one of those great days when I thought: " Thank God to have the health and be alive "although it didn't feel like that going up Corkscrew Hill, but sure that's what makes it.

Well done to everyone concerned.

Congrats to all involved in organising a most enjoyable day!

3 of us travelled from portlaoise and will be back next year. Might be worth looking at another way to fix the timing chips. My LooK pedals just did not allow for that.

To all involved in the Burren Cycling weekend, my thanks to all who organised the weekend, the sandwich makers, those who manned the food and water stations and not forgetting those who manned the junctions and shouted words of encouragement.

When finished I said never again to 160 K but today (Sunday) I said perhaps I may....

Please convey the above to all.

 Thanks to:

the cyclist from Tralee who boosted my spirits with the offer to keep me honest and complete the entire route

to the cyclist from Offaly who took my wheel going up the Corkscrew and shared the road into Lisdoon'. No way was I going to be bested by an Offaly man...!!!!

to the young cyclist from Kilmallock who was the most pleasent company.

Looking forward to meeting them again, when I'm a little fitter and more able for the hills.

Regards.

Congratulations on organising and hosting a superb event. The sense of total community involvement really made the Tour de Burren stand out.

I would like to thank especially John Nilan of BCC. I was on my third puncture just north of Doolin with about 25k to go. My rear tyre was holed and, naturally, I had no spare. My spare tube and those belonging to both of my friends had been called into service. I was up a creek without a paddle. So, I sat in a ditch waiting for the broom wagon and the chance of a spare bike. Then along came John and he sorted me out with the loan of a tyre and a tube to get me back to Ballyvaughan.

Top man, John. Right place, right time and much appreciated.

Looking froward to next year already!

Just a quick note to say how great the day was. It was my first time taking part in a cycle "race" and it was a great experience.
I've seen a lot of comments about the food stop (especially the cheesecake!) and I whole heartedly agree with the other people! Very well organised and my congratulations to all involved for affording all participants a very enjoyable day.
